Supporting Mental Health at Work Workshop
Managers are key players in creating environments that promote well-being and productivity, yet they are not mental health professionals. This workshop addresses common workplace mental health challenges, including stress, burnout, work imbalances, and interpersonal dynamics. Managers will learn to identify early signs of mental health struggles, support team members effectively, and promote a culture of openness and well-being. The programme includes guidance on addressing character differences within teams, managing workloads, and recognising when and how to refer employees to professional mental health support. Topics Covered
Mental Health Awareness in the Workplace This module introduces managers to the importance of mental health in the workplace. Participants will learn to identify common mental health challenges such as stress, anxiety, and burnout, and explore how these issues can manifest in employee performance and behaviour. The module will also cover how stigma impacts mental health discussions and ways to create a safe, non-judgmental environment. By understanding the basics of mental health, managers can foster awareness and sensitivity in their teams, promoting a culture of acceptance and understanding. Building a Supportive Team Environment This module focuses on proactive strategies to create a positive work environment that promotes mental well-being. Participants will explore techniques such as open communication, psychological safety, and fair workload distribution. Managers will learn to recognise team dynamics that might contribute to stress or conflict and develop approaches to build trust and collaboration. By fostering a supportive environment, managers can prevent mental health challenges from escalating and encourage team members to thrive professionally and personally. Effective Conversations About Mental Health Managers often feel unprepared to address mental health concerns with their team members. This module equips participants with the skills to have supportive and empathetic conversations. Using real-life scenarios and role-playing exercises, managers will learn how to approach sensitive topics, ask thoughtful and non-intrusive questions, and actively listen without judgment. Participants will also explore ways to provide appropriate accommodations and support without overstepping their role as managers. Recognising and Managing Work Imbalances Workload imbalances and team dynamics are frequent contributors to workplace stress. This module teaches managers to identify signs of overwork, underperformance, or interpersonal conflicts within their teams. Participants will learn strategies to delegate effectively, set realistic expectations, and address character differences constructively. This module also highlights the importance of flexibility, clear communication, and fairness in fostering a balanced and productive work environment. Referring Employees for Professional Support Managers are not mental health professionals, but they play a crucial role in guiding employees toward appropriate resources. This module covers how to recognise when professional mental health support is necessary, approach employees with sensitivity, and connect them with internal or external resources. Participants will explore company policies, Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs), and external referral networks. The module will also provide guidance on maintaining confidentiality and balancing team needs with individual support. |
