Managing people is not an exact science but counting what profit they do is. So lately we have been experimenting in making management within SME and Micro teams a more scientific exercise so here we are sharing some best practises.
1-Define a personal scorecard for anyone in a team
Whoever they are, whatever they do they need to have a performance scorecard which is scientific in its measurements. Thus theoretically every job is adding value and that value needs to be measured. Lets take two extremes - a cleaner and a business owner. The cleaner's measurement is the feedback we get from users of the premises. Visual observations and 'delivery' of the cleaning within a time frame and a budget. Cleaning the retail established on a busy Saturday morning is a non-starter for example. In the case of the business owner the yardstick is the profit hitting the bottom line.
2-Make the scorecard easy to use and measure
The metrics have to be easy, simple and accurate in their consistency else they become sticky and elastic in use.
3-Use the scorecard consistently
Once you have a scorecard system, it has to be used consistently and throughout. Many scorecard problems arise because the users sidestep them for various odd reasons.
Designing the right scorecard is important and critical in the success of scorecarding.
