Recently a chat with a middle manager reminded me of a sweet practice that really works magic - flower management.
What is it?
Middle managers are caught between a wall and a sword. On one side the senior managers may dictate figures down on the presumption that they are achievable. Middle managers are faced with the daily chores of getting the team to deliver.
So where do the flowers come in?
Flower come into the equation to build a special relationship between the senior and the middle managers whereby middle managers can confidently open up about the problems they are facing. Such a policy will:
1-Give space for open dialogue - we all boast of open door management but can people really 'talk' to us?
2-Meetings must be scheduled, detailed and motivating.
3-Stop talking figures and talk relations - every employee has a character, family and social environments which need to be managed.
4-Forget about flowers - a coffee with the right attitude will do!
"Do to others as you would have them do to you."
