How do you enforce discipline in a work environment?
This is a popular question asked by many new supervisor or team leaders. Here are a few tips:
1-Mark your territory
Your team needs to know you territory in finite terms. You need to tell them what you accept and don't accept.
2-Define your boundaries
Tell the team what are your thresholds in quantifiable terms. Refine these thresholds as you go along and as issues arise. You may need to compile them in a 'do and don't' list.
3-Make a link between boundary crossing and consequences
And the team needs to know what happens if they cross the line. Sometimes new appointees make the consequence worth crossing the line! Consequences should discourage repetitions, send a clear signal and create a barrier for people not to 'trespass'.
4-Be fair with anyone
Never ever discriminate and disciple has to be transparent for all to see and learn from it.
5-Enforce what you say
Discipline is challenged so you need to stick to your guns and execute the discipline. else you might as well let go!
6-Don't bark - just bite!
Go and do it - discipline not done is bad indeed.
